Louise Oates is a visual artist working in sculpture and photography, whose research led practice deals with energy and material systems. Through the lens of chemistry and biology she decenters the human and speculates on the agency of others. Entwining industries, bodies, and planetary processes, metabolisms coalesce into material narrative. Oates translates conceptual investigation into material exploration, working with diverse materials such as mycelium, copper sulphate, protein, salts, and electrical current; often activating them with pumps, fostering growth, or fixing them in semi-stable states. With this she intends to probe at ideas of chaos and stasis, change and control, by means of reflecting on our current climatic and biospheric challenges
