Robin’s work takes in the depth of painting’s tradition, it’s back and forth between intimacy and detachment; introspection and performance. His work is open to discord in terms of style, reference and subject but each move traces the threads of a deeply involved web. Moving freely between the banal and the hypothetical, his interest lies in the interdependence of these states; the points where tenderness oscillates with artifice or the profound rubs up with the modest and minor. Robin takes each new painting as a new and distinct fragment in this investigation; his images can develop from varied sources including staged photographs, found images, digital renders or quotations from art history. The variety of approaches is an important part of his practice and fits with his intention to reflect the intensity and vertigo of contemporary living. Whilst simultaneity, dissonance and counterpoint are crucial to his work, individually his paintings are defined by a pressurised stillness. His version of painting’s tradition is a compressed file with anomalies, artefacts and leakages.
