Gatt is drawn to forms of awkward beauty that oscillate between softness and hardness, resisting easy judgements of taste or value. He lingers with things that are often dismissed before they are truly seen, carefully tuning objects and visual codes until they become tender, devotional, or strange. Through cars, sports, roadside infrastructure, construction materials, advertising, signage, and internet vernacular, he investigates the visual and material cultures through which masculinity is learned, embodied, and performed. Butterflies, wings, and shields recur as relic-like sculptures and indeterminate forms between machine, body, and myth.
He has presented at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), the Institute of Contemporary Arts (London), Xxijra Hii, MICAS, Mimosa House, and in the Malta and Venice Biennales, among others. Gatt is also co-founder of Rosa Kwir, Malta’s first queer-focused gallery and project space.
